renaissance man
If my grandfather's legacy should be characterized by an abscence of data and information, it is ironic that my father should have left such an overwhelming abundance of information and materials upon his death in 2007. Since I had been working on 'family issues', I thought it would be a good idea just to continue the 'stream of work' and digitize all of his papers.
It is very temping to write his biography; I still have not discarded it. However, my father is too interesting of a figure to monopolize for myself. Initiating his career in architecture, the most public aspect of his life occurred after WWII years after he had changed professions.
The number of innovative projects are far too large to be mentioned in this small space. We might make the exception of noting that it incurred in law before the Puerto Rico Supreme Court and the Boston Court of Appeals in spite of the fact that he never went to law school and he usually acted as his own attorney. It involved various environmental fights, against the largest and most powerful of organizations: Shell Oil Co or the US Regulatory Committee, in spite of not having been a specialist in either field.
It is curious also to point out that, in spite of the tremendous differences with his father (Fernos Maldonado), there was a common 'strain' to both lives: a certain degree of 'Renaissantism' in their lives, both by the quality and by the diversity of their cultural and intellectual activity.
Both are proud exemplars of the best Puerto Rico has contributed to the world.
Hombre del Renacimiento
Si el legado de mi abuelo fue caracterizado por una crasa ausencia de información e datos concretos, es algo irónico que mi padre dejo un legado tan bultoso de información en su muerte en el 2007. Como yo había estado trabajando 'temas de familia', pense que seria una buena idea meramente continuar el 'momentum de mi trabajo' y digitalizar sus papeles.
Fue muy tentador escribir su biografía, y para serles franco todavía no lo he descartado. No obstante, my padre es una figura demasiado internaste para monopolizarla por mi propia cuenta. Iniciando su carrera en la arquitectura, el aspecto mas publico de su vida ocurrió luego de la Segudna Guerra Mudial y luego de que habia cambiado de profesiones.
El numero de proyectos innovadores son demasiado grandes para poder ser descritos en este pequeño espacio. Podemos hacer una excepción al notar que algunos ocurrieron en el campo de la ley ante la Corte Suprema de Puerto Rico y ante la Corte Federal de Apelaciones en Boston, a pesar del hecho que mi padre nunca había atendido la escuela de leyes y la gran mayoría de las veces actuaba como su propios abogado. También involucró varias peleas ambientales en contra de las organizaciones mas grandes y poderosas: la Shell Oil Co. o el US Regulatory Committee, a pesar de no haber sido un especialista en ambos campos.
Es curioso también señalar que, a pesar de las enormes diferencies con su padre (Fernós Maldonado), hubo una raíz común en ambas vidas: hubo un cierto nivel de 'hombre de Renacimiento" en sus vidas, tanto por la calidad como por la cantidad de su actividad cultural e intelectual.
Ambos son orgullosos ejemplares de lo mejor que Puerto Rido le ha contribuido al mundo.
