Should Trees receive Constitutional Protections?
With the increased global warming, caused by a number of factors, I am beginning to wonder if we should award trees the same amount of legal protections and 'liberties' that the law regularly gives ordinary citizens. Should there be a "Tree Bill of Rights" to safeguard living entities which we so often take for granted, but who do so much for the environment? (As a refresher course science 101, trees consume carbon dioxide and emit oxygen during the process of photosynthesis.) Those of us living in urban areas would immediately benefit as the increased shade would lower overall temperatures by 2-3 ° F. This in itself would mean a more pleasant atmosphere and a reduced energy consumption for air conditioners. A possible clause would be to establish a 20 foot-thick borderline alonside all streets, specifically designated for tree growth and habitation. I wonder what Eudaldo Baez Galib, a constitutional lawyer who was senator for 16 years in the Puerto Rican legislature, would think of such a measure.

Con el aumento en el calentamiento global, causado por un numero de factores, me estoy pensando a cuestionar si deberíamos de otorgarles la misma cantidad de protección legal y 'libertades' a los arboles que regularmente se asignan a ciudadanos comunes. ¿Debería de existir una "Carta constituyente de los arboles", para salvaguardar entidades vivientes que tomamos por sentado pero que hacen tanto por el ambiente. (Para refrescarles la memoria de su curso de ciencia 101, mediante el proceso de fotosíntesis, los arboles consumen dióxido de carbono y emiten oxigeno.) Aquellos de nosotros viviendo en zonas urbanas inmediatamente nos beneficiaríamos en que la mayor sombra reduciría las temperaturas unos 2-3 ° F. De por si, esto significaría un ambiente mas placentero, al igual que un menor gasto de electricidad por los aire condicionados. Una cláusula posiblemente seria establecer un perímetro de 20 pies al lado de todas calles, designados específicamente para el crecimiento y habitación de los arboles. ¿Me pregunto que pensaría Eudaldo Báez Galib, abogado constitucional que fue senador por 16 años en la Legislatura de Puerto Rico, de tal medida?
